Description

BHCG has entered into a Heads of Agreement with the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) to be a lead reference site for the Victorian eReferral Program.  BHCG is required to implement a technical solution to securely exchange electronic referrals between healthcare providers across multiple clinical software platforms.

The focus of the Victorian eReferral Program, while necessarily including a technical component, aims to:

  • deliver benefits in electronic referral processing within the submitting agency;
  • leverage the use of existing information in local clinical systems;
  • identify workflow efficiencies;
  • introduce appropriate change management strategies;
  • ensure appropriate referral pathways;
  • deliver standards based solutions;
  • Integrated in “Patient Context” with the GP software.

The e-referral project aims to deliver benefits for the Loddon Mallee region by establishing an electronic referral process. The electronic referral will establish robust referral pathways between Hospitals, GP clinics and community centres to enhance content, speed of referral processing, reduce manual handling of data whilst incorporating common standards. This project will be implemented under a regional partnership encompassing the Bendigo Health Care Group (BHCG), Loddon Mallee Rural Health Alliance (LMRHA), the Murray Primary Health Network (MPHN), and the Bendigo Loddon Primary Care Partnership (PCP).

The e-referral project proposes to incorporate a web based health informatics system. The application will be integrated with clinical software, Streamliners HealthPathways, the Service Co-ordination Tool Templates ( ScTT) 2012 tool and will support existing service provider referral process and enhance workflows. Referral forms are automatically populated with patient data directly from the clinical software (including GP software), and clinicians can specify the specialty and level of urgency for each referral. Referrals are authenticated using NASH (National Authentication Service for Health) certificates. Locally agreed criteria for referrals will be implemented and the required information is included in a standardised referral format to produce referrals of a higher quality and reduce unnecessary follow up.
