Description

Museums Victoria has highlighted the potential risks posed to patrons of the Melbourne Museum using several of their public escalators. Namely the risk of a fall from height event. Museum Victoria had a Health and Safety report undertaken on the 26th of May 2015. It highlighted the following:

  • Children are at significant risk of sustaining severe injuries on escalators, including catastrophic injuries sustained in falls from height and entrapment.
  • The young age demographic of the Museum Victoria’s visitor profile, improper activity while riding on the escalator and escalator related engineering problems all increase the risk of injury.
  • Inadequate adult supervision arising in part from the absence of active public and parent awareness toward escalator safety issues can also contribute to increase the risk of injury.

Melbourne Museum currently has 8 escalators in 4 different locations. In order to reduce the risk of fall from height events occurring, it is proposed that the existing escalator balustrades be retrofitted with new extensions to the balustrades to increase public safety.
