Victorian Rail Track is market testing for the provision of wireless internet networking services on the stations of the public rail network for commuters, using the IEEE 802.11 series of standards, promulgated by the Wi-Fi Alliance as "Wi-Fi".  If economical, VicTrack is also interested in extending the Wi-Fi network into train carriages to provide continuity of coverage.  VicTrack's intention is to allow industry to propose approaches that would provide an internet-connected commuting environment to the public as they travel between their destinations, but in an open and competitive environment that would allow any public service company to provide wireless Internet services over a common infrastructure.  Strong preference will be given to proponents able to provide Wi-Fi services that allow users to have usage charges debited directly against their ISP or carrier of choice.  A common infrastructure is preferred because the practical problems of access to sites and services in an operational rail environment would potentially cause too many liabilities if multiple infrastructure networks were deployed.
