The Victorian Government is investing $541.6 million to redevelop and expand the Ballarat Base Hospital.

The redevelopment will deliver a new emergency department, a women and children’s hub, state-of-the-art theatre suite and an extra 100 inpatient and short stay beds.

A new and expanded critical care floor will bring together operating theatres, procedure rooms, an expanded intensive care unit, endoscopy suites and consulting rooms – delivering capacity for an additional 4,000 surgeries every year. Once completed, the upgraded hospital will have the capacity to treat at least 18,000 more emergency patients and an extra 14,500 inpatients per year.

The redevelopment will be completed over multiple stages. Stage 1 works have been completed with Stage 2 works underway and due to be completed in 2024. Construction of the final stage, known as Stage 3 Main Works, is expected to be completed in 2027.

The Victorian Health Building Authority (VHBA) is intending to release a Request for Tender (RFT) in June 2023 for the design and construction of Stage 3 works that comprise the following:

• Enabling works to clear the build site inclusive of demolition of the Medical Services and Education Service buildings.
• A new tower building inclusive of basement and podium floors totalling approximately 30,000m2 gross floor area (GFA).
• External works inclusive of a new Sturt Street entrance and landscaping.

The new tower building will include the following:

• Loading dock and back-of-house functions in the basement
• Emergency department​
• Theatre suite and procedure rooms
• CSSD
• 100 new inpatient beds​
• Women and children’s hub​
