The Hattah Lakes Icon Site sits within the 48,000 ha Hattah–Kulkyne National Park and Murray–Kulkyne Park located in north‑west Victoria between Robinvale and Mildura. The Hattah Lakes are an extensive complex of approximately 13,000 ha comprising 20 perennial and intermittent freshwater lakes (12 of which are Ramsar listed) fed from the Murray River at times of elevated river flow, via Chalka Creek. The Hattah Lakes Icon Site includes the Hattah Lakes wetland complex and the adjoining floodplain area.

The availability of water in wetlands is not always a strong indicator of suitable habitat for waterbirds. The presence of resources and the quality of these resources is one of the primary drivers of species richness and abundance. The more food and resources available, the higher the number of individuals a wetland can support.

Understanding the availability of resources, one of the key drivers of waterbird dynamics, during different phases of the wetlands life-cycle will provide an important insight into actual waterbird species, and abundance over time at Hattah Lakes. The diversity, type and quality of macroinvertebrates within wetlands and the associated plant types as food-sources will help clarify which guilds can be supported on the floodplain and contribute to informing management to improve resource availability for waterbirds.
