A large number of community aged care facilities were dramatically affected by COVID in the second half of 2020 in Victoria.  As part of a local area response some residents from aged care facilities were transferred to RMH RPC wards.  

Over the ensuing period, a number of positive COVID transmissions occurred between patients and staff at RPC.  Subsequent reviews identified a number of contributing factors that resulted in three of the four aged care wards being closed.  

Many of the patients were discharged home, transferred to private facilities or transferred to RMH City Campus.  The impacted staff were redeployed to other areas of RMH for an initial period of 12 months.  

The closures have resulted in the loss of 69 sub-acute beds and 29 Transitional Care Program (TCP) beds over the past 15 months.

In order to restore use of RPC AC1 and AC2, RMH has been granted funding from VHBA to upgrade the three aged care wards.  VHBA subsequently approved the funding request in October 2021 in full with an expectation that the procurement, design, and delivery of the project will be completed by end of June 2023. The project will need to be completed by June 2023 in preparation for the business case submission to the Victorian Health Building Authority (VBHA) in line with the Victorian State Government budget timelines.  

  • Project objectives. 

  • Reinstate sub-acute 40 bed capacity at RMH Royal Park Campus.  

  • Upgrade the existing mechanical system.  

  • Create separate spaces within the ward to limit and control the ability for patients and/or visitors to move freely throughout the entire ward space. 

  • Refurbishment work include a general upgrade to wards’ painting, LED lighting
