RSPCA has partnered with Zoos Victoria to design a new Wildlife wing at the Veterinary Hospital at Werribee Open Range Zoo. This project is for the construction of an extension to the hospital, doubling the existing footprint, including fit out and installation of surgical equipment. (Surgical equipment will be supplied by Zoos Victoria.) This will provide a wildlife care wing including wards and treatment rooms for sick or injured koalas, native birds, reptile and mammal species, and additional staff amenities. Construction also includes renovating an internal section of the existing hospital.
UPDATE TO ADVANCE NOTICE – ATNKHWORZ21 – WORZ ‘Koala Hospital’
Zoos Victoria intends to release an Open tender to construct a koala hospital at Werribee Open Range Zoo. The Tender will be available at Tenderlink.
RSPCA Victoria and Zoos Victoria have entered into an agreement aimed at increasing Zoos Victoria’s capacity to treat wildlife, primarily during and after wildfire events. The agreement includes the expansion of the existing Werribee Open Range Zoo Veterinary Hospital to treat sick and injured koalas and other precious wildlife.
This project will boost the capacity of wildlife services in Victoria’s west, home to a number of bushfire-prone regions and significant numbers of native wildlife, including koalas. There is a strong need for emergency wildlife services in the region with the number of injured native wildlife climbing dramatically over the past five years – up 650%. Improving capacity will considerably enhance preparedness as we face a future with increasing frequency and intensity of bushfires.
Zoos Victoria is looking for a builder who understands and identifies with our purpose for a future rich in wildlife, to share this journey with us and contribute towards the establishment of increased wildlife treatment capacity.
The extension to the building is 21175mm x 19320mm internally, with an additional covered walkway. The renovation to the existing structure is 13200mm x 5000mm. An indicative floor plan is attached for your reference. Services engineering and detailed design is underway and will be supplied with tender.
The koala hospital extension will consist of the following:
- 2 x Treatment Rooms, 2 x wards fitted out with cages for recovering koalas and other wildlife, a Quiet room, Neonatal room, laundry, new reception, staff kitchen, meeting room, Staff offices and open-plan office area, amenities and change room.
- External covered walkway
- Utility services: power, telecom services, water, sewer and stormwater drainage, mechanical – ventilation / oxygen, ICT
Renovation to the existing building includes minor changes to the Clinic/Lab, removing a wall to enlarge the pharmacy, creation of a Sterilisation Room and other modifications.
Construction works is targeted to commence August 2021 and be completed December 2021.
