In May 2018, the Victorian Government announced $461.6 million of funding for the redevelopment of Ballarat Base Hospital, with the intention to deliver additional services to for the community of Ballarat and the wider Central Highlands area, delivered in a number of stages over a 7-year period. In December 2020 an additional $80 million was announced bringing the total commitment to $541.6 million.

The project now seeks expressions of interest from suitably experienced Architects to deliver the scope over two stages (Stage 2 & 3). The major new scope includes:

Stage 2:

• Central Energy Plant
• Education & Training
• Pharmacy & Pathology

Stage 3:

• Emergency Department
• Theatres and Procedure Rooms
• 100 new inpatient and short-stay beds
• Women and Children’s Hub
