Description

The Department of Education and Training (DET) is responsible for supporting Victoria’s high-ability students to reach their full potential, by providing these students with challenge and enrichment opportunities and building workforce capabilities within schools.

Gifted and talented students make up around 10 per cent of Australian school children. Evidence indicates that lower performing students may receive greater care and attention from their teachers, often at the expense of time spent with high-ability students to ensure their continued development. Research highlights that many teachers lack the knowledge, understanding and skills required to differentiate their practice to align with the challenge, complexity, depth and pace of learning which is required to engage and challenge high-ability students. The differences in academic potential or achievement between high-ability learners and their age peers can contribute to high-ability learners experiencing social and emotional challenges and disengaging from education.

DET’s Student Excellence Program (SEP) is part of the Victorian Government’s commitment to enabling Victoria’s high-ability students, across all government primary and secondary schools, to reach their full potential. As part of the SEP, DET is seeking to commission a supplier to design and develop content for a web-based High-Ability Toolkit for school leaders and teachers. The content will consist of high-quality, evidence-based, practical information and resources, and teacher professional learning modules. Content will include a mix of mediums (e.g. text, video).

The Toolkit aims to provide primary and secondary schools and teachers with resources that enable them to identify high-ability students and to create challenging school learning experiences, which will support the learning, engagement and wellbeing of these students now and into the future. Providing schools and teachers with targeted evidence-based, practical resources and teacher professional learning modules will build their capabilities to identify high-ability students’ needs, personalise learning, plan with the student in mind and tailor instruction for maximum growth and impact.

Purpose

The purpose of the High-Ability Toolkit is to provide schools and teachers with a comprehensive online High Ability Toolkit, containing resources which will support high-ability students with challenge and enrichment opportunities and build workforce capabilities in schools.
