The Department of Transport and Planning (DTP) is responsible for assessing Victorian driver’s and applicant’s ‘fitness to drive’ in accordance with Assessing Fitness to Drive guidelines. This includes supporting drivers to drive at any age, so long as they are medically fit to do so.  In executing its licensing responsibilities, DTP must consider the impact of the health or medical status of applicant’s and driver licence/permit holders on their fitness to drive.  From time to time, DTP requires an independent expert opinion concerning an applicant or licence/permit holder’s health or medical status to enable DTP to make an informed decision in relation to that applicant’s or licence/permit holder’s fitness to drive safely.
